Alberta has many good trout waters to float, though not all are able to be floated in drift boats. Experienced anglers know the local waters and the good fishing opportunities we have. Most people have heard or read about the Bow, Oldman, Crowsnest, or perhaps the Red Deer Rivers. There are several other waters that provide very good fly fishing without the name recognition or the attention that comes with it. Within a reasonable drive from Calgary or Red Deer there are several less known waters to drift that provide good fly fishing opportunities for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. Combining a float of our secret waters with our other fly fishing destinations can complete a well rounded fly fishing trip to Alberta.

For the open minded angler looking for something different, we host trips to a variety of waters throughout the season in small to large inflatable rafts with casting and rowing frames. The access points are sometimes a little adventurous, but once on the water the scenery and fishing are always enjoyable. You will be certain to be away from drift boats and most other fishermen. We may see an angler or two on the trip, but certainly not many as we drift through private lands flanking the waters. At times through the day you won't be able to fish from the boat as we float over shallow water or through narrow side channels - at other times you will cast to several fish along a series of dead fallen trees in the water. These waters offer diversity and some great moments.

The fishing on these waters can pick up in early May to early June and then again late June through early October.  We leave the second and third week of June off the schedule as mountain runoff often muddies the waters at that time. As runoff fades, however, the stonefly fishing can be very good. A variety of dry fly, streamer, and some nymph fishing is done, though we try to take you to waters where the dry fly fishing is best at the time.

Drop the Hopper

Ol' splat & twitch wins out again

Snuck through

There are a few tight spots to maneuver but the smaller boats come through... and find juicy water

Flaming Red

One hot rainbow tore up & down through the riffle.

At rest

We worked for this trout, no doubt. Far bankside under an overhang, cast with a reach mend, bang!

Rubber Lips

Some folks don't know what we mean when we say we're looking for a big set of rubber lips. This old boy shows his off well.

Side Show Bob

A big fat male brown lives here. Each time through we beach the raft and wade over to say hello.

Chasing Rainbows

A fine trough under a gentle riffle revealed a few nice 'bows.

Pleasantries

A typical, gorgeous mid summer afternoon on a trout stream.

Big Red

A fine ride seats you up where you can work the water.

Looking...

Time always allows for inspection of the water that trout just have to be holding in. Sure enough, a nice rainbow showed.

Surprise!

The flats had been slow all day until this fine brown rose to the caddis.

In tight

A few stetches are tight and casts have to be well ahead of the boat. Some are smaller waters and just enough room to work from the bow.

Stoneflies

Mid July is always a good time to investigate these waters. A fine rainbow hammered the surface and tried to run all the way home.

Culprit

This is him. The critter that caused all that fuss on the river today.
