We operate a remote, wilderness, float plane access retreat, set in a World Heritage Site, kitty corner to Jasper and Banff National Parks, where we cast to trophy brook trout averaging 3 - 4 pounds. The lake record is just under 12. That's a mouthful and then some, and the entire experience certainly is apt to make a lasting impression on you. We are the only facility on the lake and the only guides permitted to operate in this provincial park.

Your introduction to Fortress is a 45 minute flight over the Canadian Rockies, near the Columbia Icefield. This region is the genesis to the major rivers of North America, shedding water to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. We fly past countless glaciers, rivers, and lakes, as we fly over a hundred miles of rugged mountain wilderness.

There are a few locations in North America where 4 pound trout are common. Most brook trout locations you read about are set in the muskeg and biting insect infested Labrador or Newfoundland waters that can ruin your vacation experience. At Fortress Lake we see very few mosquitoes and black flies. Our location is set on a gravel floodplain and water temperatures are regulated by glaciers surrounding the lake. It's those glaciers that give Fortress its stunning coloration and protection - the valley is dominated by towering mountains over 1 mile above the lake's elevation.

While at Fortress Lake, you will enjoy very comfortable, private accommodations. We have 6 guest cabins - each cabin has one queen and one single bed. Our beds are comfortable and are dressed with down duvets and new linens. The cabins are bright with a clean pine finish and have windows with views of the surrounding peaks.

Fishing for large brookies at Fortress is done both wade fishing from shore and from our boat fleet. Our boats are for guests to use to shuttle to key points of the lake to either drop anchor and cast, or anchor and wade. Streamer fishing and nymphing are equally effective, with sporadic dry fly opportunities. The lake offers good fishing from ice out in late May through late October. There are subtle fishing differences and opportunities throughout the year but good fishing for trophy brookies is always available.

Doorway to the Rockies

Each Cabin has a view of the surrounding mountain peaks towering over the valley below.

Chisel Peak

One of several peaks to tower over a mile above Fortress Lake.

Twice the Love

The fishing can get quite good. Over 10 pounds of trout in two casts.

Cover Boy

Brian posed with this beauty and found himself on the cover of the 2006 Outdoor Canada Fishing Special. And why not? It was a special moment.

Lake wolves

During aggressive times, most of the season, our brookies are extremely opportunistic.

Attractions

Canoeing, kayaking, sailboards, and sailboats combined with the exceptional hiking and fishing provide other recreation.

Home for the week

Surrounded by mountains, each cabin offers peace and quiet in a private setting.

Serenity Now!

Serenity glacier dominates the west end of Fortress Lake, offering a photogenic backdrop to the day's fishing.

Scenery

The fishing is a nice distraction from the scenery. Or was that the other way around?

Winter Maintenance

A 31 km ski after a 5 hour drive to the trailhead sees us arrive just in time to shovel snow off a dozen buildings. We also cut ice for the ice hut and wood for the cabins. Winter isn't "time off".

Floating

Dropping anchor to cast or wind drifting and casting to fish are the prime methods of success.

Chisel's Backside

Rises straight up out of the lake and towers 6000+ feet about the lake.

The colouring creek

Chisel Creek flows all summer, adding glacial silt to the lake. Glacial silt gives us the beautiful blue of Fortress Lake.

Continental Divide

The river in the foreground flows east across the continent to Hudson's Bay. Fortress Lake flows into the Columbia River and then the Pacific Ocean. The Continental Divide is about 200m and occurs at the east end of the lake.

Rising

An early morning flight from Fortress led us to another lake on the way home to fish for golden trout. Trophy brookies and the rare golden trout make a unique fishing combination.

All the King's men

Quincy, Saddlier, Chisel, Serenity, and Fortress Mountains all show their majesty as we fly in to Fortress,

Attraction

Patterns that cause a reaction get a reaction. Big fish like easy meals. We do our best to give them just that.

Mules don't cross suspension bridges

We were once asked if a pack mule could make it to Fortress. No. Loaded mules don't like bouncing on narrow little suspension bridges that you must cross. Treat your mules well.
