The Bow River flows out of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, through Banff National Park and eastward to the city of Calgary. Below Calgary, the Bow gains its international repute as one of the world's best trout rivers, as this reach is considered the best fly fishing in Canada. Browns and rainbows in the 16 to 22" range are common and most days will see many fish over 20" landed. Trout in the 23 to 28" range are caught often as well, with larger trout present yet. The Bow is quite easily accessed. Flights to Calgary, Alberta, Canada can be arranged direct from most cities in N. America. From west coast cities like San Francisco or Seattle, Calgary is a 2 hour flight, allowing for quite easy travel. Car rentals are easy to arrange and fishing the Bow and other waters in the Calgary area is close at hand. Fly fishers will experience dries, nymphs, wets, and streamers during an average day. The prime dry fly season begins mid May and runs through October, with the exception of run off (early to mid June). Streamers can be quite effective throughout the year and nymphs/wet flies always a valuable method of fishing. When the hatch is on, large singular trout or pods of a range of sizes can be encountered. While drifting in a drift boat, we will either cast to risers while drifting, anchor and cast from the boat, or anchor and wade back up to the risers. Accommodations while fly fishing the Bow are generally in hotels or bed & breakfasts in Calgary. This makes sense as all amenities are then close at hand and your guide can arrange pick up and drop off from there. Fly shops are also then nearby in case you need to pick up last minute supplies, replace gear, or purchase fishing licenses.
