fortress lake green policy

fortress lake retreat

In consideration of the first rule of back country ecology, "If you use it, you effect it", we acknowledge that our existence in one of Canada's most incredible settings has impact. Human use in remote locations is an interesting study, which inevitably comes down to the realization that there are few areas of the world where human use has not taken priority. In Hamber Park, on the shores of Fortress Lake, our facility recognizes we have impact. As passionate caretakers and stewards of Hamber Park, its healthy and functioning ecological web, and tremendous brook trout fishing, we take great care to limit our footprint. Fortress Lake Retreat recognizes the obligation to our guests, employees and park visitors of current and future generations, to operate in a manner that is environmentally responsible. Since we purchased the retreat in 2005, our ownership and management has implemented policies and procedures that address waste reduction, re-use of goods, recycling, reduction of our footprint, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy and water conservation and other issues that affect resource use.

  • We strive to eliminate usage of fuels as practically possible. We've eliminated propane lighting, transitioned to smaller/cleaner 4 stroke motors, use a smaller float plane, use an extremely efficient on demand water heater for showers (thus reducing an older wood fired system), eliminated wood fired stoves in favour of an efficient propane model.
  • We strive to use new technologies for power. We've converted to a self tracking solar system for our main power, and each cabin is now lit with individual, small solar systems. We are considering a small wind turbine system.
  • We have increased insulation to the main buildings to reduce required energy use.
  • All garbage is flown out, with no storing.
  • If it can be recycled, we strive to do so.
  • Implement catch and release fishing.

  • Conversion of incandescent and old fluorescent lighting with more energy efficient bulbs.

  • Minimize exposure to hazardous chemicals and cleaning products by using the least toxic materials available.

  • We invite you to share any ideas for the betterment of our program with us.

Together, we can make Fortress Lake Retreat and Hamber Provincial Park a shining example of how conservation and recycling can work toward a better tomorrow.
